Not sure what fish to get for your fish garden?
We recommend using these fish species:
Description: Platies come in different colors and pattern varieties. They are easy to care for and many types can readily adapt to changes in water conditions. These are not schooling fish, however, can do well in groups of either the same sex or with multiple females and one male.
Behavior: Chill demeanor, often caught playing in the bubbles from the pump, will often catch them pooping, likes to hide from time to time.
Size: Platies generally grow to about 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length. Specifically Dwarf platies usually stay around 1 inch (2.5cm).
Water Temperature: 70-82°F (21-28°C). Certain types of platies can handle even colder temperatures.
Diet: Flake food
Recommendation: This fish species is ideal if you plan on growing 2-3 plants. They produce a significant amount of poop (which the plants will love!). We highly recommend getting dwarf platies because they usually stay about 1 inch (2.5 cm), allowing you to comfortably have 2-3 platies in the tank. If your local pet store has run out of dwarfs, we recommend going with 1-2 platies, as they will grow to be up to 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length. In terms of tank setup, make sure there are some hiding spots for your platies, such as a cave or lofty structures, to provide personal space among the platies.
Description: Danios are very active and hardy fish with distinctive horizontal stripes or spots. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups. These fish can do well in groups of either the same sex or with multiple females and one male.
Behavior: They always have the zoomies, interacts with the plant roots, often a hierarchy amongst the school.
Size: Danios typically grow to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length.
Water Temperature: 64-74°F (18-23°C)
Diet: Flake food
Recommendations: This fish species is ideal if you plan on growing a single plant, and want to see fish in action! We recommend getting 2-4 danios. We advise avoiding dangilia danios and giant danios because they will out grow the 3 gallon tank! In terms of tank setup, make sure there are some lofty structures, like plants or branches, to provide enough personal space amongst the school and help establish water columns for the danios to zoom around in.
Note: Various types of fish can coexist in the same tank as long as the needs of each species are accommodated for. We advise speaking with someone at your local pet store for their recommendations on other species. Keep in mind various pet stores have their own policies to follow when selling fish.
BEWARE First Time Fish Owners:
Fish act like they're always starving, refrain from overfeeding.
Fish go still when they sleep.
Fish will learn who you are. So if you catch them watching what you're doing, they are just admiring from a far.....and hoping you'll feed them.
